Cupping/Hijama 2

What is Cupping/Hijama???

Cupping/hijama is something that was prescribed to Prophet Muhammad (the last prophet and messenger of Allah (God) to be sent to all of mankind), peace be upon him, and his ummah (community) as a form of healing. This is a detoxification process where all bad blood/toxic blood is removed from the body. Cupping (hijama) is the best remedy recommended and used by the Messenger-Sallahu alayhi wa salaam (peace be upon him). The Messenger-Sallahu alayhi wa salaam said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]. He-Salaahu alayhi wa salaam also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he sallahu alayhi wa salaam did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, “Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama).” [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]. This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah.

‘Hijama’ in arabic is derived from ‘hajm’ which means ‘sucking’. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum.

Further, cupping (hijama) is a cure for every disease if performed in its correct time. The Messenger-Sallahu alayhi wa salaam said, “Indeed in cupping (hijama) there is a cure.” [Saheeh Muslim (5706)]. The Messenger-Sallahu alayhi wa salaam also said, “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

What to Expect

For the record, the cupping/hijama that I do is blood-letting.  Many do not realize this but having wet cupping/hijama done is like that of a blood transfusion.  Also because one may experience detoxification symptoms or become lightheaded after the treatment, it is advised that the client have their services done in their residence.

Moving on, I should inform you that just before the cups are applied to the skin, the practitioner puts alcohol on the places cups one by one on various places of the body. You then begin to feel the pulling which means that all of the bad blood is being pulled from the body to the surface of the body while the suctioning is taking place. Then the cups are removed and you feel a scratching similar to that of a kitten trying to get use to its claws lightly scratching you, and if you have a Muslim practitioner, he/she should be familiar with the du’a (prayer) and are saying them as they are doing this. This sensation is the cutting/puncturing that takes place. From this the therapist then puts the cups back on so that the blood can fill the cups. When the cups are ready to be removed, the blood that can be seen resembles that of jelly and is dark in color (see illustration below), and again the practitioner will put betadine solution on the places where the cups once were as the area is cleaned.

After this, you will see bruises and maybe even little scratches, if you use black seed oil (as the practitioner will do after the betadine solution) for the itching, with jojoba oil, and/or coconut oil, for the marks, they are sure to disappear over time, Lord-willing.

The price for this service begins at $60 for a full treatment which includes the use of essential oils and massage. For each additional cup used please add $10.  For wet cupping (blood letting)/hijama without essential oils, the treatment begins at $40 and $10 for each additional cup used.  For an extra $25, you can enjoy a Bemer session which would take place right before we begin the cupping/hijama session. In having used the Bemer prior to each session, it has been noticed that the blood flow is much better, praise God!  First time sessions are complimentary (FRRE)!  Once again, services are best if done in client’s home, so please be sure to read terms below:
